MOVED BY THE SPIRIT … SPEAKING IN TONGUES

(2 Pet. 1:21; Acts 2:4; 1 Cor. 14:18)
A Message by Rev Dr Vincent Leoh on 27 June 2010

NEW TONGUES FOR A NEW PEOPLE

“Speaking in tongues”
Glossa ~ the supernatural gift of tongues (Acts 2:4, 10:46, 19:6, 1 Cor 14)
Dialektos ~ earthly languages (Acts 2:6, 8, 11)

Tongues can be heavenly languages – tongues of angels (1 Cor 13:1), and they can be human languages as well – tongues of men.

WHAT IS SPEAKING IN TONGUES?

It is NOT “gibberish” but Praise to God – Acts 2:11
It is NOT a status symbol, indicating that one Christian is more spiritual than another.
It is NOT a shortcut to instant spiritual maturity.
It is NOT a hypnotic, zombie like state in which the person has no control of his faculties.
It is a sign to unbelievers 1 Cor 14:22
It is a source of Power for the believer 1 Cor 14:4.
It is directed to God 1 Cor. 14:2
It is of the spirit, not the soul of man 1 Cor 14:14

SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS COMPLETELY BIBLICAL

Isaiah 28:9-12
Mark 16:17
Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6
1 Cor. 12:10, 28; 14:5, 18, 39; Rom. 8:26
You can’t separate “speaking in tongues” from the Holy Spirit!

THE THREE MANIFESTATIONS OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES

1. EVIDENTIAL TONGUES. There are tongues that you receive when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:1-4; 10:44-46; 19:6

2. MINISTRY GIFT OF TONGUES. And there is the gift of tongues that is used for the edification of the church as a gift of the Spirit. 1 Cor 14:1-5, 13-28; 12:28

3. INTERCESSORY TONGUES. The ability to pray in other tongues, or “in the Spirit” (1 Cor 14:2, 14- 16; Eph 6:18; Jude 20) and edify (build up) ourselves (1 Cor 14:4.) It is to be used in worship and personal devotions and prayer.

The Spirit Helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26)

BENEFITS OF PRAYING IN TONGUES

Speaking in tongues is the only gift which the Bible specifically states that it edifies the person who is speaking.

1. Builds oneself up spiritually (Jude 20)
2. Keeps us conscious of His Presence (John 14:17)
3. Helps us to fully trust God (1 Cor. 14:2).
4. Eliminates selfishness from our prayers (Rom. 8:26)
5. Expresses Praise and Worship (1 Cor 14:15)

FOUR WAYS OF PRAYING IN TONGUES

Devotionally
Prophetically.
Spiritual warfare.
Celebration.

Tongues are a wonderful tool God has given His people to enjoy His presence more fully and intimately, and to make us more effective in our service for Him.

HOW TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

1. Come Clean Before God.
2. Be willing to forgive and let go.
3. Expect God to move in you.
4. Start praising God for what He has done.
5. Make a decision to speak.
