It is well with my soul
IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL
(Ecclesiastes 6-8)
A Message by Rev Dr Vincent Leoh on 16 August 2009

“ … his soul is not satisfied” (6:3, 7 NKJV)
“Which my soul still seeks but I cannot find” (7:28)
”It will be well for those who …” (8:12b)
I. MAN IS A TRINITY
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Gen. 2:7 NKJV)
“I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well” (Psa. 139:14)
Origin of the Soul
Traducianism: “The souls of men are propagated along with the bodies by generation, and are therefore transmitted to the children by the parents.” (Berkhoff, Systematic Theology. p. 197.)
Creationism: “The soul is a creation of God, owing its origin to a direct creative act.” (Berkhoff, p. 199). Except for Adam, the Bible makes no clear remark regarding the origin of the soul.
Dichotomy: Body and Soul (Luke 1:46-47; Isa. 26:9)
Trichotomy: Body, Soul, Spirit (1 Thess. 5:23; Heb. 4:12)
MAN IS TRIPARTITE (GENESIS 2:7)
a. Man was made with a material BODY
b. Man was made with an imparted SPIRIT
c. Man was made to be a living SOUL
A soul is that aspect of a human being that makes us authentically human. A soul is that attribute that comprises the will, intellect and emotion… our conscience, our reasoning, our personality … Souls have passion and power and potential… the soul is who we are as a complete person
When a person dies, his/her spirit retains the soul and will go to heaven or hell
SOME THINGS THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT THE SOUL:
Mt:22:37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mt:10:28: “….fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Mt:11:29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mt:16:26: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Lk:12:19-20: And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
We are born again of the spirit (John 3:5-7; Prov. 20:27) but our soul must be renewed with the Word of God (Heb. 10:39; James 1:21-25Rom 12:1-2)
II. HOW IS YOUR SOUL?
1. Caged Soul (Ezek. 13:18)
2. Soul for Sale (Mat. 16:24-28)
What is the worth of a soul? “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mat. 16:26
3. Tormented Soul (2 Pet. 2:6-8)
4. SOULQUEST: Things that do not satisfy the Soul (Eccl. 6:3, 7; Mark 10:17-31)
“For it is known that he is man … For who knows what is good for man in life?” (Eccl. 6:10b; 12)
III. HOW TO SATISFY YOUR SOUL
Our Thirsting Soul is Satisfied (Isa. 55:1-5)
“My soul seeks after and is satisfied” (Psa. 63:1-11)
Desire (Psa. 63:1-2) – My soul thirsts for Thee (:1)
Delight (:3-6) – My soul shall be satisfied (:5)
Destiny (:6-11) – My soul follows after Thee (:8)
Our Healthy Soul Prospers (3 John 2; 1 Thess. 2:13)
Our Soul Finds Rest in God alone (Mat. 11:28-29b)
IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL
“When peace like a river, attendeth my way;
When sorrows like sea-billows roll;
What ever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, It is well with my soul.” (Horatio Spafford)
“… it will be well for those who fear God, who fear before Him.” (8:12b)
